Acne scars are a common condition resulting from acne breakouts and can appear as individual colored marks or textural changes on the skin’s surface.
It’s important to note that acne doesn’t always lead to scarring, and there are steps you can take to minimize the risk. Acne scars typically form when acne penetrates the tissue beneath the skin, causing significant damage. As the body repairs the wound with collagen, the differing tone and texture of collagen compared to the surrounding skin can create a visible difference.
Acne scars are usually categorized into two main types: atrophic (depressions in the skin) and hypertrophic (raised from the skin’s surface). Atrophic scars, often affecting the face, occur when insufficient collagen is produced during healing. These scars can present as rolling scars, which give an uneven rippled appearance, or as pockmarks, which look like oval holes of varying sizes. Other terms for acne scars include indents, boxcar scars, or pick scars.
When acne scars affect the chest and back, they are more often hypertrophic scars. These result from excess collagen production during the healing process, in contrast to atrophic scars.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) occurs as an inflammatory response to a pimple or spot, leading to an overproduction of melanin. These dark spots can appear on all skin types and colors. Although research is limited, many studies suggest that PIH results from picking or popping zits, which increases inflammatory signals to the spot. Avoiding picking and squeezing can help reduce the symptoms of PIH.
Topical skin lighteners can treat PIH, resulting in a more even and balanced skin tone. Using retinols, vitamin C, and hydroquinone can help lessen hyperpigmentation. Additionally, aesthetic treatments such as laser therapy, microneedling, HydraFacials for pigment, and light therapy can help address unwanted pigmentation.
