Aqualyx is derived from several plant-based compounds, with the active component naturally occurring in the human body. The solution, primarily composed of deoxycholic acid, emulsifies fats by dissolving the membranes of fat cells in the treated area.
Once the fat cells become unstable, they break down, and the body’s immune system eliminates the fatty acids through the lymphatic system and liver. Unlike liposuction, Aqualyx also promotes skin tightening in the treated area, resulting in a more contoured and toned appearance.
Aqualyx works by breaking down subcutaneous fat over a month, often starting immediately after injection. The human body stores fat in areas like the abdomen and thighs for energy. However, genetic predispositions can make it difficult to break down certain fatty deposits through diet and exercise alone, leading to stubborn fat pockets.

The doctor will begin by cleaning the area and applying numbing cream, allowing 15 minutes for it to take effect. Once the cream is wiped off, a grid-like area will be marked on the skin with a pen.
Small injections are then administered into the fat layer. These injections are generally minimally painful. Up to 10 small doses may be injected into the fatty area under the chin. For larger body parts, a cannula is used to disperse the treatment, minimizing bruising, discomfort, and swelling.
The entire process takes about 30 minutes, and you can resume normal activities immediately. If treating the double chin area, expect swelling to begin almost immediately. While you can return to normal activities as soon as you feel ready, the area may be tender for up to two weeks. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for seven days to allow the treatment to settle.
If treating a double chin, it’s best to schedule the procedure at a time when you can avoid social events for a week. You can use a scarf or turtleneck to conceal swelling until it subsides.
Aqualyx was developed by Professor Pasquale Motolese, President of the Italian Society of Aesthetic Surgery and Medicine. It has received CE approval for use in the UK, ensuring it meets the European Union’s health and safety standards.
Since 2009, Aqualyx has been used in over 2 million treatments across 49 countries. It boasts a strong safety record supported by sound medical science. Adverse effects are minimal, typically limited to swelling for 7-10 days post-treatment, which can be uncomfortable. Complications are rare but may include pain, bruising, and itching.

The number of Aqualyx treatments needed varies based on the size of the fatty deposit. Typically, small areas like under the chin require 1-3 treatments, while larger areas such as the thighs may need 2-6 treatments.
Treatments are spaced 6-8 weeks apart, and results will become visible approximately 6 weeks after your final session. Keep in mind that results can vary from patient to patient.
For optimal results, more than one treatment may be necessary.
Whilst the body can regenerate fat cells – the process is very slow. So once fat cells are removed from a localised area your results are as good as permanent.
However, if you do not continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle then your body will put on weight in other areas where fat cells remain.
Immediately after treatment, you may experience redness, swelling, and possible bruising in the treated area. The skin may feel sunburned for a few days.
Aqualyx works by causing an inflammatory reaction in the fat cells, leading to significant swelling for about 3-5 days. If you undergo a double chin treatment where swelling is more noticeable, consider planning time away from work or social engagements for 72 hours.
We recommend avoiding physical exercise for 3-7 days post-treatment, depending on the treated area (e.g., avoiding spinning classes if the inner thighs were treated).
To reduce swelling, use a cool pack wrapped in a cloth for 20-minute intervals daily. Avoid anti-inflammatory tablets (ibuprofen) for 48 hours post-treatment, as they can counteract the treatment’s effects. The treated area may feel tender and firm for up to 4 weeks after the procedure.
Aqualyx is very safe if administered by a highly trained practitioner. Side effects can be bruising and swelling but these are only transient and clear.
If the product is injected at the wrong level or does not disperse correctly then a small tender nodule ( inflammatory nodule) can appear 2 weeks after the treatment. These are often minor and have no long-term effects. They clear within 2-3 months and do not return. Although they can be worrying to the patient these nodules almost always resolve.
By using a cannula to inject the product and going to a clinic fully trained in the procedure the risk of inflammatory nodules are minimal.
